HJC i80 Helmet: Is It a Safe and Versatile Choice for New Riders?

Buying your first motorcycle helmet can be surprisingly difficult.

New riders are confronted with different helmet styles, safety ratings, shell sizes and prices—often after spending most of their available budget on the motorcycle itself.

The temptation is to purchase the cheapest helmet that feels comfortable and looks good. However, your helmet is the most important piece of protective equipment you will wear, and price should never be the only consideration.

For this edition of The Gear Report, I visited the AutoCycle Centre stand at the AMID Motorcycle and Lifestyle Expo at Red Star Raceway. Mark Vine introduced me to the HJC i80 and explained what riders should consider when buying, fitting and eventually replacing a motorcycle helmet.

Why Choosing Your First Helmet Matters

Many new riders enter motorcycling without knowing what separates a properly certified helmet from a cheaper alternative.

They may spend as much as possible on the motorcycle and then attempt to save money by purchasing an inexpensive helmet. That approach overlooks the helmet’s most important purpose: managing impact energy and protecting the rider’s head during an accident.

A suitable first helmet needs to meet several requirements.

It should:

  • Carry a recognised safety certification
  • Fit the rider’s head correctly
  • Suit the intended type of riding
  • Provide adequate ventilation
  • Offer good visibility
  • Remain comfortable during longer journeys
  • Have replacement parts available
  • Come from a reputable manufacturer and supplier

The HJC i80 is designed to combine several of those requirements in a relatively affordable modular package.

Two Helmet Configurations in One

At first glance, the HJC i80 appears to be a conventional adventure helmet.

It has a prominent peak, an upright profile and the styling typically associated with adventure and dual-sport riding. The design suits riders using adventure motorcycles, touring bikes and dual-purpose machines.

However, the peak can be removed.

Once removed, the i80 becomes a more conventional flip-up touring helmet. The chin bar, visor and internal sun shield continue to operate in the same way, but the helmet takes on a cleaner road-oriented appearance.

This gives owners two useful configurations:

  • An adventure-style helmet with the peak installed
  • A modular touring helmet with the peak removed

That versatility could be particularly valuable to a new rider who has not yet settled on one specific type of motorcycling.

The same helmet can be used for commuting, weekend touring, adventure riding and longer road trips without forcing the owner to purchase separate helmets immediately.

A Proper Modular Helmet

The HJC i80 uses a flip-up chin bar.

A release mechanism allows the front section to be raised, making it easier to speak to someone, refuel or take a short break without completely removing the helmet.

A locking mechanism secures the chin bar once it has been lowered.

The convenience of a modular helmet can make it attractive to commuters and touring riders, but riders must also understand whether a particular helmet has been certified for use with the chin bar open.

That is where the HJC i80’s P/J homologation becomes important.

ECE 22.06 Safety Certification

The i80 carries ECE 22.06 certification.

ECE 22.06 is the current European motorcycle-helmet safety standard commonly used for road helmets sold in South Africa. It introduced more comprehensive testing than the previous ECE 22.05 standard, including additional impact locations and rotational-impact considerations.

Certification does not mean every helmet provides identical protection in every accident. It does, however, confirm that the model has passed the tests required by the applicable standard.

For a new rider, checking the certification label should be one of the first steps when considering a helmet.

The HJC i80’s certification gives buyers reassurance that it meets the current standard expected from a modern road helmet.

What P/J Homologation Means

The HJC i80 also carries P/J homologation.

The “P” designation relates to the helmet’s use with the protective chin bar closed, while the “J” designation relates to its approved open-face configuration.

In practical terms, this means the helmet has been homologated for use with the chin bar in both positions.

Not every modular helmet carries this approval.

Some flip-up helmets are designed to be opened while stationary but should be closed before riding. The i80’s P/J rating makes it more flexible, although riders should still consider the reduced facial protection associated with riding with any chin bar raised.

Internal Sun Visor

An internal sun visor is built into the helmet.

The visor can be lowered when riding in bright conditions and retracted when the light changes. This removes the need to stop and change the main visor whenever the rider moves between sunlight, cloud cover or shaded roads.

The position of the internal visor can also be adjusted.

Small locating points allow it to sit slightly higher or lower depending on the rider’s face, nose and eyewear. This gives the rider some control over how the sun shield fits rather than forcing everyone to use one fixed position.

For riders who wear glasses, that adjustability could make a meaningful difference to comfort.

HJC-compatible tinted outer visors are also available separately for owners who prefer that appearance or want additional glare reduction.

Two Front Ventilation Points

Ventilation is particularly important in South Africa’s warmer riding conditions.

The i80 has two ventilation controls at the front of the helmet. One directs airflow towards the rider’s mouth, while the upper vent helps circulate air towards the visor.

This airflow can improve comfort and assist with controlling moisture and fogging inside the helmet.

Ventilation performance can vary depending on the motorcycle’s windscreen, the rider’s position and the speed at which they are travelling. Nevertheless, having separate ventilation points gives the rider more control over the airflow entering the helmet.

Pinlock Anti-Fog Insert Included

A Pinlock insert is supplied with the helmet.

The insert fits against the inside of the main visor and creates an insulating layer that helps prevent condensation from forming across the rider’s field of vision.

For riders who have never used one, the difference can be considerable.

Visor fogging is not merely an inconvenience. It can obstruct the rider’s view during cold mornings, rain or humid conditions, forcing them to open the visor when protection from the weather is needed most.

Including the Pinlock insert in the box means buyers do not immediately have to purchase another accessory to make the helmet practical in changing conditions.

Replaceable Interior Components

The HJC i80 has replaceable cheek pads and interior lining components.

Helmet padding compresses over time. Sweat, repeated use and the pressure created when putting the helmet on can gradually make the interior feel looser.

Replacement cheek pads allow an owner to refresh the fit without immediately replacing an otherwise serviceable helmet.

They can also make it easier to maintain hygiene, particularly for riders who use the helmet frequently or ride in hot conditions.

Replacement parts available for the i80 include:

  • Cheek pads
  • Interior lining components
  • Main visors
  • Tinted visors
  • Pinlock inserts

The availability of replacement parts is an important consideration when buying a helmet. A damaged visor or worn interior should not make the entire helmet unusable simply because the correct components cannot be sourced locally.

How Long Should a Helmet Last?

Mark recommended replacing an HJC helmet after approximately five years, depending on its use, condition and exposure.

A helmet can look acceptable externally while the materials inside have deteriorated.

The energy-absorbing EPS liner is one of the most important parts of the helmet. Its condition cannot necessarily be judged by looking at the outer shell or checking whether the paint has been scratched.

Heat, sunlight, chemicals, repeated handling and general ageing can all affect a helmet’s materials over time.

A helmet should also be replaced after a significant impact. Damage is not always visible from the outside, and a compromised EPS liner may no longer manage energy as intended during another accident.

Replacing cheek pads can restore comfort and fit during the helmet’s normal service life, but it does not reset the age or condition of its protective components.

Avoid Dropping or Leaving Your Helmet in the Sun

How a helmet is stored can affect its usable condition.

Riders should avoid leaving their helmet exposed to strong sunlight for extended periods. It should also be kept away from fuel, solvents and harsh cleaning chemicals that may damage its materials.

Dropping a helmet should be avoided as well.

A minor fall from a low surface does not automatically mean every helmet has become unusable, particularly if nothing was inside it at the time. However, a harder impact or any uncertainty about damage should be assessed properly.

The safest approach is to treat a helmet as protective equipment rather than ordinary luggage.

Store it carefully, keep it clean and never assume that an undamaged outer shell guarantees that everything beneath it remains perfect.

Correct Fit Is Essential

Certification and features are important, but even an expensive helmet cannot perform as intended if it does not fit correctly.

Many riders arrive at a dealership believing they wear a particular size because that size felt comfortable in a previous helmet.

Helmet sizes are not always directly comparable between brands or models. Head shape also matters. Two riders with the same head circumference may not find the same helmet equally comfortable.

The fitting process should begin by measuring around the widest part of the head.

That measurement provides a starting point, but the rider still needs to try the helmet on and check how it fits around the crown, temples, cheeks and back of the head.

A New Helmet Should Feel Snug

A new helmet should feel tight without creating painful pressure points.

The interior will settle and compress slightly after it has been worn several times. A helmet that feels loose in the showroom is therefore likely to become even looser after regular use.

When I tried on the medium HJC i80, it felt firm around my cheeks but not uncomfortable.

Mark checked the fit by moving the helmet while I was wearing it. My head moved with the helmet rather than allowing the shell to rotate independently.

That is what you want from a secure fit.

The helmet should not move freely around your head, lift excessively or rotate far enough to interfere with your vision.

Warning Signs of an Incorrect Fit

A helmet may be too tight if it causes immediate pain or concentrated pressure around the temples, crown or back of the head.

It should not distort your vision or create numbness.

However, firm cheek pressure is normal in a new full-face or modular helmet. The cheek pads will typically settle as the helmet is worn.

A helmet may be too loose if:

  • It rotates independently when moved
  • It lifts away from the rider’s head
  • The cheek pads barely make contact
  • It shifts when the rider shakes their head
  • It can be removed too easily while fastened
  • Its position changes significantly in wind

The objective is not to find the helmet that feels most relaxed during the first 30 seconds. It is to find one that remains secure after the padding has settled.

Micro-Ratchet Fastening System

The i80 uses a micro-ratchet fastening system.

This system allows the strap to be secured and released relatively quickly while offering several adjustment positions.

Regardless of the fastening system used, the strap needs to be adjusted correctly.

A helmet that has not been fastened securely may come off during an accident. Riders should therefore develop the habit of checking the chin strap every time they put the helmet on—even for a short journey.

Premium Feel at an Accessible Price

At the time of filming, the HJC i80 retailed for approximately R4,000.

That places it above the cheapest entry-level helmets but below many premium touring, adventure and race-replica models.

The interior felt considerably more premium than its price suggested. The lining was comfortable, the mechanism felt solid and the helmet did not give the impression that essential features had been removed to reach a lower price.

Buyers should naturally confirm current pricing with an authorised retailer, as prices can change after filming.

The important question is not whether R4,000 is the lowest possible price for a helmet. It is whether the helmet provides an appropriate combination of fit, certification, practicality, support and value.

Who Should Consider the HJC i80?

The i80 could suit several types of rider.

New riders may appreciate being able to purchase one certified helmet that can cover multiple types of riding.

Adventure riders get a peak, a wide field of vision and modular convenience.

Touring riders can remove the peak, use the internal sun visor and benefit from the flip-up chin bar.

Commuters may value the quick fastening system, ventilation and ability to open the helmet during short stops.

It could be particularly suitable for riders who want:

  • ECE 22.06 certification
  • P/J modular homologation
  • Adventure and touring configurations
  • An internal sun visor
  • A Pinlock insert
  • Replaceable interior parts
  • Nationwide parts and dealer support
  • A price below premium flagship helmets

No feature list can determine whether it is the correct helmet for a particular rider. The final decision must still depend on fit.

Dealer and Replacement-Part Support

Powered by Autocyclets supplies HJC helmets and parts through motorcycle retailers across South Africa.

Mark explained that its preferred network includes approximately 30 dealers nationwide. Riders can also enquire through other established motorcycle shops supplied by the distributor.

Buying through a reputable dealer provides more than access to the helmet itself.

An experienced salesperson can measure the rider’s head, identify potential pressure points, recommend the correct size and explain how the helmet should fit once its padding has settled.

That assistance is especially valuable for someone purchasing their first proper motorcycle helmet.

My First Impression

My immediate impression of the HJC i80 was that it offered far more than a basic entry-level helmet.

The removable peak makes it adaptable, the flip-up design is practical and the internal sun visor adds genuine everyday convenience.

More importantly, it carries current ECE 22.06 certification and P/J homologation, while replacement interior components and visors should make it easier to maintain throughout its usable life.

The fit was snug without being painful, and the interior felt considerably more premium than I expected at the price.

A showroom fitting cannot reveal everything.

I still need to assess wind noise, ventilation, stability at speed, comfort over longer journeys, visor operation and how the helmet performs in different weather conditions.

Those impressions will come after I have spent four to six weeks riding with it.

Final Thoughts

The HJC i80 demonstrates why buying a helmet should involve more than choosing a colour and checking the price.

Safety certification, correct fit, ventilation, visibility, replaceable parts and intended use all need to be considered.

For approximately R4,000 at the time of filming, the i80 offered a strong combination of features. It can operate as an adventure-style helmet with its peak installed or as a more conventional modular touring helmet with the peak removed.

Its ECE 22.06 certification, P/J homologation, internal sun visor, included Pinlock insert and replaceable interior components make it a practical option for new and experienced riders.

The most important lesson from my conversation with Mark was simple: buy the helmet that fits correctly and provides the protection appropriate for your riding—not merely the cheapest one you can find.

I will continue using the HJC i80 during upcoming motorcycle reviews and return with a complete long-term assessment once I have experienced what it is like to live with on the road.
